About the event

The Ragtime Era had its share of “hits” (rags like “Maple Leaf Rag,” “Dill Pickles Rag,” and “Black and White Rag”) that were widely played and recorded, and the Ragtime Revival Era has raised up its own share of rags to “hit” status (think of “The Entertainer,” “Solace,” or even “Ragtime Nightingale”). Yet, for every rag that enjoyed widespread success, there were 50, 100, or more that did not.

Plenty of rags and ragtime-era songs flopped and disappeared because they simply weren’t very good. But some excellent ones remained hidden and virtually unknown for a variety of reasons: maybe they were poorly distributed, or maybe they were one-offs written by composers with no name recognition that simply didn’t sell.

This concert celebrates the rich and wonderful musical variety to be found among these Ragtime Era rarities. Enjoy the thrill of hearing seldom-performed century-old syncopated delights played live and discover some new favorites along the way.
